With industrialisation came the modernisation of Burley, instanced by changes in the Malt Shovel.

In
the 1880s the spanking new Malt Shovel Hotel was built, though the
defunct pudding tree was retained. The owners hoped to attract some of
the tourist trade which had come to Wharfedale and particularly Ilkley
with the opening of the railway in 1865.
