SUGGESTED LOCAL RAMBLES
By Colin Newton
Notes before you start –
- Don't underrate weather conditions, especially in exposed areas. Wear suitable clothing for the time of year. Good stout boots are recommended at all times.
- Please keep to the routes as described: they use public rights of way.
- Gates that were closed when you reach them should be closed behind you.
- Dogs should be kept on a lead for this country walk.
- It is always a good idea to carry refreshments with you.
- Green “Footpath” signs are normally found only at an intersection with roadways. Much smaller “way–marker” signs are often to be found on fences, gates etc. away from roads. These are normally angled to give a helpful indication of the direction of the path to be followed.
General safety
- If you are doing the walk by yourself, it is a good idea to tell someone your route.
- After poor weather, conditions on parts of the moor route can be very slippery and it is a good idea to take a light–weight adjustable walking stick with you for extra support.
Maps
- The accompanying BCC sketch map gives a general indication of the walk – just click on the small image to display a larger, printable version.
- Ordnance Survey maps Explorer 27 (Lower Wharfedale & Washburn Valley, 2½" to 1 mile) for good detail of paths, and Landrover 104 (Leeds, Bradford & Harrogate Area, 1¼" to 1 mile) for general landmarks etc., are recommended in addition.
We hope these walks will encourage you to explore the extensive network of footpaths around our village.
